Nosotros at Boulderthon: Fifth, Tenth, and a 5K Runner-Up

Jan Thewes fifth and Nemo Cionelo tenth in the Boulderthon elite half. Amilia Wise runner-up in the open 5K. Haley Wood third in her age group in the 10K.

Five of us raced Boulderthon on Sunday. Three distances, one finish line on the Pearl Street Mall at 5,335 feet. Nosotros has sent athletes to races before. This was the first time we went as a team.

Amilia Wise finished runner up in the women’s open 5K with a season opener of 18:09, a personal best if you give her the generous altitude conversion for 5,335 feet. We’ll save that calculation for you…and Coach Cleveland. As the 12th overall female and first in her age group (20-24), we now realize Amilia should have registered for the elite race. Not a bad debut for a post-collegiate 800m specialist.

Jan Thewes and Nehemiah “Nemo” Cionelo didn’t make the same mistake as they lined up with the elite field for the half marathon behind big names like Reed Fischer and Rory Linkletter. Chasing them down, Jan led the second pack through 13.1 miles and a very steep climb on the back half. Finishing 5th in a 1:10:01, Jan spearheaded Nosotros through their first proper team race (and half marathon for that matter). Tailing him by a few spots, Nemo kicked his way into 10th by milliseconds, running a 1:12:07.

Haley Wood and Gretchen Slattum took the 10K. Haley finished third in her age group. Gretchen was out there with her, which is what we came down for.

Coach Shane Cleveland was on Pearl Street for all of it. Edwin Siuda, Daniel Carr and Andrey Kutchma came down from Gunnison to work the course, which with five of us in three races starting at three different times was most of the morning.

The squad raced in Ultra K kit. Hammer Nutrition handled the fuel all weekend.

First one as a team. We’ll take it.
